“Choreographer Mathew Janczewski captures the suppleness and clarity of dance gesture as a language in itself, independent of any melodramatic overlay. Pure as a mountain stream carrying essential minerals, One Room brings to mind Trisha Brown’s unassuming complexity.” – Linda Shapiro, City Pages
Mathew Janczewski brings his subtle, rich and viscerally honest choreographic voice to the TEK BOX stage for a one-of-a-kind performance by ARENA DANCES. Through Nils Frahm’s experimental and contemplative music, the full evening, all female sextet surges with the central theme of equality. Personal and collective power will prevail, as the dancers negotiate the space around them, and each other, with movement that builds layer by layer, working toward a powerful resolution. Crafted collaboratively between Janczewski and the dancers, the movement is a meditation on the need to join together in one room, coming to the table to face conflict, negotiation, compromise, and strength as one voice.
